Guild Mania!

Okay, we’ve got a lot of guilds to get through and not a lot of time before Mom realizes I’m not studying for my quiz. Today we’ll be looking at the DGA, BAFTA, ASC, and CAS. Rather than put my commentary after each category, I’ll put it after each guild. So, let’s get jiggy with it.

***DIRECTORS GUILD OF AMERICA***

BEST DIRECTOR OF A MOTION PICTURE

Ben Affleck, Argo
Kathryn Bigelow, Zero Dark Thirty
Tom Hooper, Les Miserables
Ang Lee, Life Of Pi
Steven Spielberg, Lincoln

Nothing too unexpected. David O. Russell’s snub stings a bit, but this looks like these will be the Oscar nominees. Nothing to write home about.

“I said “I want to be a space astronaut! Go to outer space, discover things that have never been discovered.’ He said, ‘Look, you’re British, so scale it down a bit.'”

Sorry, just had to include an Eddie Izzard quote there. All in all, this is a pretty good list. I like the fact that someone actually recognized Ben Affleck for his acting in Argo, not just directing. Amour, Anna Karenina, and Skyfall seem clever picks for Oscar’s British cousin.

***AMERICAN CITY OF CINEMATOGRAPHERS***

OUTSTANDING CINEMATOGRAPHY IN A MOTION PICTURE

Anna Karenina
Les Miserables
Life Of Pi
Lincoln
Skyfall

Even though Les Misérables has clearly been taking cinematography lessons from Battlefield Earth, It still managed to beat The Master. What’s up with that?

***CINEMA AUDIO SOCIETY***

LIVE-ACTION SOUND MIXING

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Les Misérables
Lincoln
Skyfall
Zero Dark Thirty

ANIMATED SOUND MIXING

Brave
Frankenweenie
The Lorax
Rise Of The Guardians
Wreck-It Ralph

I would go on a rant about ParaNorman being snubbed, but that’s hardly as big a deal compared to the addition of an animated category, separating animated films from live-action. Even the field of sound is prejudiced against animated films for being too ‘cartoony’ and ‘colorful’ to be compared to live action. It makes me sick.

Well, anyway, that’s four guild awards. Peace out!
