This is a hard one. The makeup branch has been known for taking horrible films (Click, Norbit) and making them Oscar nominees. This year, they’re making us angry by excluding Cloud Atlas, which was the assumed frontrunner. Instead we get three nominees that all have a chance at winning.
Probably the film with the smallest chance is Hitchcock, seeing as how many people didn’t like this film. Aging makeup to make a popular movie star look like a historical figure worked wonders for Meryl Streep last year, but the film has only gained one nomination, and from what I’ve seen the makeup isn’t even very good.
Not like in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The realization of the dwarves and elves makes it my favorite in the category, and the Middle Earth series have already won two awards for their makeup. But still, the Academy likes to think outside the box (just not where we want them to look.) Therefore, the Academy may feel that they already gave Peter Jackson their blessing. Why do it again?
I think that the likely winner here is Les Misérables. Not only is it a Best Picture nominee, but the filmmakers have marketed the heck out of all the craft categories, makeup included. A lot of the actors are made up to look unrecognizable, and while the makeup wouldn’t make it into my top three, I still think it’s very well done, and I think it’s probably your best bet.
Will Win: Les Misérables
Runner’s Up: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Should Win: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Wait a minute, I almost forgot! This is my 100th post! Holy cow, I can’t believe it! And I have something very special to say..
Don’t do drugs.
