DIRECTORS GUILD OF AMERICA
Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity (My favorite directorial effort of all time.)
Paul Greengrass, Captain Phillips (Fair enough.)
Steve McQueen, 12 Years A Slave (No surprise there.)
David O. Russell, American Hustle (As Seth MacFarlane put it, this man is “The very best at sitting in a chair and watching other people make a movie.)
Martin Scorsese, The Wolf Of Wall Street (I’m not even sure if I want to see this one.)
This is bad news for Alexander Payne but especially for Spike Jonze. But don’t forget that the DGA only had two right last year.
AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CINEMATOGRAPHY
Captain Phillips
The Grandmaster
Gravity
Inside Llewyn Davis
Nebraska
Prisoners
12 Years A Slave
“I thought you liked nominees, Maria.” “Well yes, but- seven?” Strong set of nominees. Gravity is winning.
COSTUME DESIGNERS GUILD
PERIOD
12 Years A Slave
American Hustle
Dallas Buyers Club
The Great Gatsby
12 Years A Slave
The support for Dallas Buyers Club is growing stronger every day, but I don’t see a reason to nominate it over more stylized work such as The Invisible Woman, The Book Thief or even Inside Llewyn Davis. Gatsby is the frontrunner, but anything else could foreshadow an upset.
CONTEMPORARY
Blue Jasmine
Her
Nebraska
Philomena
The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty
Of these, I say Blue Jasmine has the best chances.
FANTASY
The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Oz The Great And Powerful
Catching Fire had the best costume design of any film this year. I’m going to cross my fingers that it wins here but Oz could steal.
BAFTA
You know what, I’m getting tired, so I’m just gonna put a link to where you can read the nominees here. Could these nominees poise Gravity in the right position to win it all? We can only hope.
