BEST ENSEMBLE: American Hustle
BEST ACTOR: Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
BEST ACTRESS: Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years A Slave
BEST STUNT ENSEMBLE: Lone Survivor
Okay, so let’s go over the winners and what this means for their Oscar chances.
Of the four acting categories, the most clear-cut one is Best Supporting Actor. Jared Leto takes this in a sexy walk. Then there’s Best Actor. Chitiwel Ejiofer may have started the season strong, but Matthew McConaughey is taking everything. And since his film is now a Best Picture nominee, it looks like he’s winning, too.
Best Actress is veering towards Cate Blanchett. I was literally saying to myself just before her name was called. “Please not Cate.” but Cate is winning. But don’t forget the whole academy votes. And the academy, as a whole, likes Gravity. So, a lot of people will have seen it/a lot of people will like it. The way I figure it, there’s only two possible outcomes. Sandra Bullock either makes it down to the stage in one piece and she’ll have one hell of a story to tell… or her chances burn up in the first ten minutes. Whichever way it goes, no harm no foul. Because either way… It’ll be one hell of a ride.
(For those of you who are confused, that was a Gravity reference.)
Then there’s Best Supporting Actress. It’s a tight race between Lupita and Nyong’o. Nyong’o seems more likely, but think about this. If none of the cast from ‘American Hustle’ win awards, it’ll be only the second film in Oscar history to get nominations in all four acting categories and win none of them. And the first was My Man Godfrey all the way back in 1936! So the odds are that Lawrence will win, unless Amy Adams surprises.
As for Best Ensemble, it’s beginning to look like 12 Years and Hustle are duking it out. I’m starting to root for the former, as I believe it would be a much better Best Picture Winner than the latter.
