Bess Picture Reviews: The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King

I say that I’m reviewing Return Of The King, but this is ultimately my review of the entire LOTR trilogy, mainly focusing on the final one. I found the trilogy as a whole to be very enjoyable, even though the CGI hasn’t aged terribly well (I found the scenes with Gollum to be unintentionally comical and awkward.)

The Fellowship Of The Ring is probably the best of the trilogy. The Two Towers is a little weaker, but it has an incredible action scene at the end. The Return Of The King might be the weakest film in the series, but that certainly doesn’t make it bad.

I’m not completely in love with the trilogy the way some people are, but I did enjoy these films and considering the fact that they 9 hours in total, the trilogy didn’t seem that long. My main complaint about Return Of The King is that the ending did go on for a while (really, isn’t that everybody’s complaint?)

I’m not a huge fan of fantasy movies, but I found these movies to be enjoyable and I think what they did best is the word building. Middle Earth really seemed like it was a real place with a history and cultures. Credit goes to the production design and costume design for really making Middle Earth pop.

I almost don’t know what to say about a movie series that everybody else already seems to have an opinion on. But, if you haven’t seen this trilogy, I would highly recommend that you do. Let’s just hope that you have a lot of time on your hands.

  1. Great review Conman!

I also agree that Fellowship is the best because it really does a great job with the characters.

This one was great, but the teases for a real ending do get frustrating along the way 🙂

  2. Yeah, I didn’t really care for these, but I’m not the right audience. LOL…I just found this 9 hours of running, fighting then running away. I do agree that FOTR is the best of the bunch.
