This is one of the craziest bunch of nominations I have ever heard of.
Seriously, what do you even make of this?
CAST ENSEMBLE
“Beasts Of No Nation”
“The Big Short”
“Spotlight”
“Straight Outta Compton”
“Trumbo”
1/5. This is one of the craziest things ever! And you know what’s really weird? Trumbo is the only one of these movies to have more than one individual acting nomination. Beasts, Big Short, and Spotlight only have one. And Straight Outta Compton doesn’t have any of it’s actors nominated!
But what does this ultimately mean? Spotlight is the only one of these films I’m actually predicting to get a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars. Are the SAG awards just really out of left field this year, or could some of these films end up changing the Oscar race in a big way?
LEAD ACTOR
Bryan Cranston – “Trumbo”
Johnny Depp – “Black Mass”
Leonardo DiCaprio – “The Revenant”
Michael Fassbender – “Steve Jobs”
Eddie Redmayne – “The Danish Girl”
4/5. Four of these I predicted, and If they loved Trumbo, good for them. But how did Matt Damon end up being the one left out?
LEAD ACTRESS
Cate Blanchett – “Carol”
Brie Larson – “Room”
Helen Mirren – “Woman In Gold”
Saoirse Ronan – “Brooklyn”
Sarah Silverman – “I Smile Back”
3/5. I don’t know if people couldn’t see Joy in time or what, but Mirren and Silverman? They must really love Helen Mirren. Also, this basically kills whatever shot Carey Mulligan or Lily Tomlin had at an Oscar nomination.
SUPPORTING ACTOR
Christian Bale – “The Big Short”
Idris Elba – “Beasts Of No Nation”
Mark Rylance – “Bridge Of Spies”
Michael Shannon – “99 Homes”
Jacob Tremblay – “Room”
2/5. I got Rylance and Tremblay. What an insane category! And where are Keaton and Ruffalo? I thought they were sure things! This also puts a dent in Paul Dano’s campaign, but it’s very good for Elba. But how many of these will actually get Oscar nominations?
SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Rooney Mara – “Carol”
Rachel McAdams – “Spotlight”
Helen Mirren – “Trumbo”
Alicia Vikander – “The Danish Girl”
Kate Winslet – “Steve Jobs”
4/5. Not bad. Mirren came out of nowhere, as did the rest of Trumbo.
Globe nominations tomorrow. Right now, I need to recover.
