2016 Oscar Predictions: April Edition

Well, it’s been a month. Time to update these. The main factor that’s changed is that I now believe that Zootopia will be the fourth animated film in history to receive a Best Picture nomination. It sounds crazy, but with reviews like these, it certainly seems possible. Hey, the last time I was this confident about something as early as April, it was Brie Larson winning Best Actress. And look how that turned out.

BEST PICTURE

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
The Birth Of A Nation
The Disaster Artist
The Founder
Nocturnal Animals
La La Land
Silence
Sully
The Zookeeper’s Wife
Zootopia

I replaced The Jungle Book with Zootopia. Early word on The Jungle Book is very strong, but I can’t really imagine two Disney talking animal movies getting nominated for Best Picture.

BEST DIRECTOR

Niki Caro – The Zookeeper’s Wife
James Franco – The Disaster Artist
Ang Lee – Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
Nate Parker – The Birth Of A Nation
Martin Scorsese – Silence

No change. I really don’t have a clue in this category.

BEST ACTOR

James Franco – The Disaster Artist
Tom Hanks – Sully
Michael Keaton The Founder
Liam Neeson – Silence
Nate Parker – The Birth Of A Nation

No change here either. I’m really not sure about this category, especially seeing how both Franco and Neeson could potentially go supporting.

BEST ACTRESS

Amy Adams – Nocturnal Animals
Emily Blunt – The Girl On The Train
Jessica Chastain – The Zookeeper’s Wife
Viola Davis – Fences
Meryl Streep – Florence Foster Jenkins

Replaced N’yongo with Davis. I’m really not sure if Streep is gonna get her 20th nomination for this, but in the last decade, she’s never missed twice in a row. Also, look out for Emma Stone in La La Land and Jennifer Lawrence in Passengers.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Daniel Bruhl – The Zookeeper’s Wife
Dave Franco – The Disaster Artist
Andrew Garfield – Silence
Jake Gyllenhaal – Nocturnal Animals
Nick Offerman – The Founder

No change. Hey, you tell me what to do about this category.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Jennifer Anniston – The Yellow Birds
Ujane Ellis – The Birth Of A Nation
Jennifer Jason Leigh – LBJ
Laura Linney – Sully
Kristen Stewart – Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk

Replaced Dern with Ellis. She plays a mute in this well received slavery drama, and that might be a ticket to a nomination.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

The Birth Of A Nation
The Founder
La La Land
Story Of Your Life
Zootopia

I replaced LBJ with Zootopia.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Billy Lynn’s Halftime Walk
The Disaster Artist
Nocturnal Animals
Silence
The Zookeeper’s Wife

No change.

BEST FILM EDITING

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
The Disaster Artist
The Founder
Silence
Sully

No change. These five films look like good contenders.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
Birth Of A Nation
Hail Caeser
The Jungle Book
Silence

No change, except in the winner. Enjoy loss #14, Deakins.

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN

Birth Of A Nation
Hail Caeser
Silence
Story Of Your Life
The Zookeeper’s Wife

Replaced The Jungle Book with The Zookeeper’s Wife. This might be the one category where they award Birth Of A Nation.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN

Alice Through The Looking Glass
Birth Of A Nation
Hail Caesar
Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiars
Silence

No change. I really don’t know what’s gonna win in this category.

BEST MAKEUP & HAIRSTYLING

Birth Of A Nation
Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them
Silence

No change. This is all just guesswork.

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

The BFG
Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them
The Jungle Book
Star Wars: Rogue One
Story Of Your Life

No change. I’m fairly confident that Jungle Book is winning this award.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE

The BFG
Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
The Jungle Book
Story Of Your Life
The Zookeeper’s Wife

I really don’t know what to tell you about this category.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG

“???” – The BFG
“???” – The Jungle Book
“???” – Moana
“???” – Sing Street
“Try Everything” – Zootopia

No change except in the winner.

BEST SOUND EDITING

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
The Jungle Book
Star Wars: Rogue One
Sully
Zootopia

Replaced Passengers with Zootopia.

BEST SOUND MIXING

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
The Jungle Book
La La Land
Silence
Sully

No change except in the winner.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

Finding Dory
Kubo & The Two Strings
Loving Vincent
Moana
Zootopia

No change. Also, this category might already be locked.

Let’s see how the Oscar season unfolds, shall we?
