I’ve been very very busy lately, and I have a lot to catch up on. For now, here are the nominees for the Golden Globes and SAG awards.
BEST PICTURE (Drama)
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell Or High Water
Lion
Manchester By The Sea
Moonlight
No Silence, Fences, Jackie, Loving, or Sully. Also, none of these films star women.
BEST PICTURE (Comedy or Musical)
20th Century Women
Deadpool
Florence Foster Jenkins
La La Land
Sing Street
Sing Street is a shock. Deadpool is probably only on to get ratings.
BEST DIRECTOR
Damien Chazelle – La La Land
Tom Ford – Nocturnal Animals
Mel Gibson – Hacksaw Ridge
Barry Jenkins – Moonlight
Kenneth Lonergan – Manchester By The Sea
This race looks like it’s coming down to Chazelle vs. Jenkins.
BEST ACTOR (Drama)
Casey Affleck – Manchester By The Sea
Joel Edgerton – Loving
Andrew Garfield – Hacksaw Ridge
Viggo Mortensen – Captain Fantastic
Denzel Washington – Fences
Interesting that Mortensen got in this category instead of in Comedy.
BEST ACTOR (Comedy Or Musical)
Colin Farrell – The Lobster
Ryan Gosling – La La Land
Hugh Grant – Florence Foster Jenkins
Jonah Hill – War Dogs
Ryan Reynolds – Deadpool
I believe that Ryan Reynolds is the first person to ever be nominated for a Globe for playing a superhero. Good for him.
BEST ACTRESS (Drama)
Amy Adams – Arrival
Jessica Chastain – Miss Sloane
Isabelle Huppert – Elle
Ruth Negga – Loving
Natalie Portman – Jackie
And this was the moment I felt bad for Emily Blunt. Thankfully, I just had to wait two days to feel better.
BEST ACTRESS (Comedy Or Musical)
Annette Bening – 20th Century Women
Lily Collins – Rules Don’t Apply
Hailee Steinfeld – The Edge Of Seventeen
Emma Stone – La La Land
Meryl Streep – Florence Foster Jenkins
In a perfect world, Auli’i Cravalho and Ginnifer Goodwin would both be here. Just saying.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Mahershala Ali – Moonlight
Jeff Bridges – Hell Or High Water
Simon Helberg – Florence Foster Jenkins
Dev Patel – Lion
Aaron Taylor-Johnson – Nocturnal Animals
Helburg is a shocker. I recently saw Nocturnal Animals, and I think I prefer Shannon’s performance just slightly over Taylor-Johnson.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Viola Davis – Fences
Naomie Harris – Moonlight
Nicole Kidman – Lion
Octavia Spencer – Hidden Figures
Michelle Williams – Manchester By The Sea
I’m just gonna save some time and say that SAG chose this exact lineup. This might just be your Oscar five.
BEST SCREENPLAY
Hell Or High Water
La La Land
Manchester By The Sea
Moonlight
Nocturnal Animals
Nocturnal Animals is the only adapted screenplay in the lineup, which gives it the edge in being nominated for an Oscar.
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
Arrival
Hidden Figures
La La Land
Loving
Moonlight
In other news, Arrival is no longer eligible to be Oscar-nominated. But La La Land is, so it’s probably gonna win the Oscar.
BEST ORIGINAL SONG
“Can’t Stop The Feeling” – Trolls
“City Of Stars” – La La Land
“Faith” – Sing
“Gold” – Gold
“How Far I’ll Go” – Moana
Why is Sing Street nominated in the Picture category but not here? Also, it’s starting to look like ‘City Of Stars’ might just be our frontrunner.
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
Kubo & The Two Strings
Moana
My Life As A Zucchini
Sing
Zootopia
No Finding Dory. That really worries me, since the Academy has a habit of not nominating Pixar when they know they’re not gonna give them the win. But I guess it doesn’t matter too much, as long as Zootopia walks away with the Oscar.
And now for the SAG nominations!
BEST ENSEMBLE
Captain Fantastic
Fences
Hidden Figures
Manchester By The Sea
Moonlight
So, uh… no La La Land. There’s a big debate going on about what this means for te film’s Best Picture chances. Some people say it doesn’t mean anything, because the film is mainly Gosling and Stone, while others are quick to point out that Braveheart is the only film to win Best Picture without a SAG ensemble nomination. This category just got so much more interesting.
BEST ACTOR
Casey Affleck – Manchester By The Sea
Andrew Garfield – Hacksaw Ridge
Ryan Gosling – La La Land
Viggo Mortensen – Captain Fantastic
Denzel Washington – Fences
I hope Tom Hanks is gonna get on in the end.
BEST ACTRESS
Amy Adams – Arrival
Emily Blunt – The Girl On The Train
Natalie Portman – Jackie
Emma Stone – La La Land
Meryl Streep – Florence Foster Jenkins
YAY EMILY BLUNT!!! I’m so thrilled to see her name pop up. She gave one of my absolute favorite performances of the year. In all honesty, I think this is a strong lineup.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Mahershala Ali – Moonlight
Jeff Bridges – Hell Or High Water
Hugh Grant – Florence Foster Jenkins
Lucas Hedges – Manchester By The Sea
Dev Patel – Lion
Strong category. No mention of Nocturnal Animals, and I am starting to worry that Silence had better expand it’s release schedule, or else it’s gonna be shut out on Oscar morning.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Viola Davis – Fences
Naomie Harris – Moonlight
Nicole Kidman – Lion
Octavia Spencer – Hidden Figures
Michelle Williams – Manchester By The Sea
Again, same category as the Globes.
BEST STUNT ENSEMBLE
Captain America: Civil War
Doctor Strange
Hacksaw Ridge
Jason Bourne
Nocturnal Animals
Why do I get the feeling that the only reason Nocturnal Animals got on is because of that opening scene… shudder.
——————-
Well, it looks like I have movies to watch and reviews to write. Awards season is officially upon us, and all I have to say is…
