Every year, I look forward to the Gotham nominations. To me, this announcement marks the beginning of Awards Season. This is when I start to tally up every film that has earned at least one mention
BEST FEATURE
Call Me By Your Name
The Florida Project
Get Out
Good Time
I, Tonya
For the past three years, the film that Gotham chose as the Best Feature winner went on to win the Best Picture Oscar. That’s an interesting stat that I don’t think will be repeated this year. I’m not currently predicting any of these films to be nominated. I may have to change that.
PREDICTED WINNER: Call Me By Your Name
RUNNER UP: Get Out
BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
Ex Libris: The New York Public Library
Rat Film
Strong Island
Whose Streets
The Work
I haven’t really been following this category, so I don’t know if any of these films receive Oscar nominations.
PREDICTED WINNER: Whose Streets
RUNNER UP: Rat Film
BEST ACTOR
Willem Dafoe – The Florida Project
James Franco – The Disaster Artist
Daniel Kaluuya – Get Out
Robert Pattinson – Good Time
Adam Sandler – The Meyerowitz Stories
Harry Dean Stanton – Lucky
It’s important to remember that at the Gothams, they don’t separate the acting categories into Lead and Supporting. I expect Dafoe to take this as his first step on the road to an Oscar. In other news, “Oh hai James Franco!”
PREDICTED WINNER: Willem Dafoe
RUNNER UP: James Franco
BEST ACTRESS
Melanie Lynskey – I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore
Haley Lu Richardson – Columbus
Margot Robbie – I, Tonya
Saoirse Ronan – Lady Bird
Lois Smith – Marjorie Prime
I’m not predicting any of these women to get an Oscar nod. It’s tricky to figure out who will win here.
PREDICTED WINNER: Margot Robbie
RUNNER UP: Saoirse Ronan
BEST SCREENPLAY
The Big Sick
Brad’s Status
Call Me By Your Name
Columbus
Get Out
Ladybird
I’m happy to see that The Big Sick is getting some love. Once again, I have no idea if any of these scripts will succeed at the Oscars.
PREDICTED WINNER: Call Me By Your Name
RUNNER UP: Get Out
BREAKTHROUGH ACTOR
Mary J. Blige – Mudbound
Timothée Chalamet – Call Me By Your Name
Harris Dickinson – Beach Rats
Kelvin Harrison Jr. – It Comes At Night
Brooklyn Prince – The Florida Project
Hard to see how Mary J. Blige is a ‘breakthrough’, but whatever. Also, It’s weird how Mudbound showed up here, but nowhere else.
PREDICTED WINNER: Timothée Chalamet
RUNNER UP: Brooklyn Prince
BINGHAM RAY AWARD FOR BREAKTHROUGH DIRECTOR
Maggie Betts – Novitiate
Greta Gerwig – Lady Bird
Kogonada – Columbus
Jordan Peele – Get Out
Joshua Z. Weinstein – Menashe
This award is almost certainly going to Jordan Peele.
PREDICTED WINNER: Jordan Peele
RUNNER UP: Greta Gerwig
And, that’s that. The Gotham Award will be held on November 27th. Until then, I’ve got a lot of work to do.
