Here is another Netflix Original Movie that received a Gotham nomination. I was genuinely curious about this particular movie, but after seeing, I feel somewhat conflicted. It’s a good film, but it wasn’t exactly my cup of tea.
The film is a dramedy about a family reunion with a high-profile cast. And based on that sentence alone, you can probably tell whether or not the film is going to be for you. Now, I haven’t seen any of Noah Baumbach’s other films, so I’m new to his style. And the film does at least make an attempt to stand out from your typical dramedy.
The big draw to this film is the ensemble. Adam Sandler proves yet again that he actually can do drama, while Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson give two very strong performances to add to their respective lineups. I was actually very surprised by Ben Stiller’s dramatic work near the end of the film.
This is a good dramedy with a strong ensemble, enjoyable writing, and good editing. It’s not really my type of film, but I enjoyed it for what it was. And no, I don’t think this film has any serious shot to be an Oscar nominee.
