2012 Movie Reviews: The Lorax

When I saw the trailer for this movie, I thought it looked awesome. Now when it comes to Dr. Seuss movies, I tend to think the opposite of everyone else. I’ll take a ‘Cat In the Hat’, hold the ‘Horton Hears A Who’ any day. But this film everyone agrees on- it was okay, I guess. How about i tell you what I liked and what I didn’t like.

WHAT I LIKED: The animation. Not only is the work on Truffula Valley beautiful, but the work on the arching stairways in Thneedville and other details really make you feel like you’re in a Dr. Seuss world. Also, anything that was taken from the original book was put together and adapted well, especially the Once-Ler. The voices did a good job, and it was a blast to the past that any Seuss fan will probably enjoy.

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE: The songs. Now, don’t get me wrong, ‘How Bad Can I Be’ was fun, but the rest came without warning, aren’t catchy at all, and when they end, you think to yourself “What the hecky wecky was that?” I may like the adapted story, but the original story with Ted, Audrey, and O’Hare I really could go without. O’Hare in particular was way too underdeveloped. I guess the story could get a bit unadorned. (yes, I’ve been to a thesaurus.) I also didn’t like the ending, but I won’t spoil it.

Well, if you want to know if this movie is for you, that depends on the mood you’re in. If you’re a big Seuss fan, you most likely will enjoy this experience, but anyone else will find it forgettable. I’ll let you come to your own conclusions. And as for the 3-D, it really isn’t worth the extra money. I’m going to give it three stars out of five.
