I’m gonna read off the nominees and tell you which ones I think will win, could win, and should win. (Yeah, these are late. I know.) To make things a little less confusing, i’m gonna put movies that I’ve seen in bold. With that said, onto the nominees.
BEST MOTION PICTURE (DRAMA)
Captain Phillips
Gravity
Philomena
Rush
12 Years A Slave
They gave it to Avatar in 2009, remember? And then the following year, they gave it to The Social Network. The HFPA aren’t afraid to go for the popular choice over the Oscar darling.
WILL WIN: Gravity
RUNNER UP: 12 Years A Slave
SHOULD WIN: Gravity
BEST MOTION PICTURE (MUSICAL/COMEDY)
American Hustle
Her
Inside Llewyn Davis
Nebraska
The Wolf Of Wall Street
Common sense says American Hustle. I’m going to vote for it reluctantly, but the whole night I’ll be begging for Her to win.
WILL WIN: American Hustle
RUNNER UP: Her
SHOULD WIN: Her
BEST ACTOR (DRAMA)
Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years A Slave
Idris Elba, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom
Tom Hanks, Captain Phillips
Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
Robert Redford, All Is Lost
I predict this will be the one big win for 12 Years A Slave. If somebody else wins, watch out.
WILL WIN: Chiwetel Ejiofer, 12 Years A Slave
RUNNER UP: Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
SHOULD WIN: Chiwetel Ejiofer, 12 Years A Slave
BEST ACTOR (MUSICAL/COMEDY)
Christian Bale, American Hustle
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf Of Wall Street
Bruce Dern, Nebraska
Oscar Isaac, Inside Llewyn Davis
Joaquin Phoenix, Her
At this point, any of them could win. So i’m just going to vote for the guy who deserves to win.
WILL WIN: Joaquin Phoenix, Her
RUNNER UP: Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf Of Wall Street
SHOULD WIN: Joaquin Phoenix, Her
BEST ACTRESS (DRAMA)
Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
Sandra Bullock, Gravity
Judi Dench, Philomena
Emma Thompson, Saving Mr. Banks
Kate Winslet, Labor Day
This is between Blanchett and Bullock. I don’t want to go with Bullock and have it be wrong, so I’ll vote for Blanchett. If i’m right, good. If I’m wrong, great.
WILL WIN: Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
RUNNER UP: Sandra Bullock, Gravity
SHOULD WIN: Sandra Bullock, Gravity
BEST ACTRESS (MUSICAL/COMEDY)
Amy Adams, American Hustle
Julie Deply, Before Midnight
Greta Gerwig, Frances Ha
Julie Louis Dreyfus, Enough Said
Meryl Streep, August: Osage County
Man, I need to see more movies. The win is going to Meryl, because she’s Meryl. I’m not concerned about Amy’s oscar chances. At least, not this year. I am fully confident that Amy Adams will win her oscar next year for Big Eyes.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Barkhad Abdi, Captain Phillips
Daniel Bruhl, Rush
Bradley Cooper, American Hustle
Michael Fassbender, 12 Years A Slave
Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
Leto has this in the bag.
WILL WIN: Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
RUNNER UP: Bradley Cooper, American Hustle
SHOULD WIN: Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Sally Hawkins, Blue Jasmine
Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle
Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years A Slave
Julia Roberts, August: Osage County
June Squibb, Nebraska
Lupita may be on her Oscar march, but count on the Globes to go with the most popular choice. Besides, if American Hustle loses best picture, this could be the film’s big award of the night.
WILL WIN: Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle
RUNNER UP: Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years A Slave
SHOULD WIN: Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years A Slave
BEST DIRECTOR
Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity
Paul Greengrass, Captain Phillips
Steve McQueen, 12 Years A Slave
Alexander Payne, Nebraska
David O Russell, American Hustle
Even if Gravity doesn’t win, I can’t imagine the HFPA ignoring Cuaron’s directing.
WILL WIN: Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity
RUNNER UP: Steve McQueen, 12 Years A Slave
SHOULD WIN: Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity
BEST SCREENPLAY
American Hustle
Her
Nebraska
Philomena
12 Years A Slave
It’s unclear what direction the HFPA will go here. I’ll vote for Her (my pick for the year’s best screenplay)
WILL WIN: Her
RUNNER UP: 12 Years A Slave
SHOULD WIN: Her
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
All Is Lost
The Book Thief
Gravity
Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom
12 Years A Slave
I’ll give this to Steven Price (But if Thomas Newman were nominated – watch out)
WILL WIN: Gravity
RUNNER UP: 12 Years A Slave
SHOULD WIN: Gravity
BEST ORIGINAL SONG
“Atlas”, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
“Let It Go”, Frozen
“Ordinary Love”, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom
“Please Mr. Kennedy”, Inside Llewyn Davis
“Sweeter Than Fiction”, One Chance
It’s interesting that they’re nominating Please Mr. Kennedy even though the academy deemed that song ineligible. Well, it looks like the HFPA don’t want to build a snowman, but I’m willing to let it go. Man, I am so bad at puns.
WILL WIN: “Let It Go”
RUNNER UP: “Ordinary Love”
SHOULD WIN: “Let It Go”
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
The Croods
Despicable Me 2
Frozen
The HFPA loved Frozen so much that they snubbed Monsters U just so that there wouldn’t be any question. That’s dedication.
WILL WIN: Frozen
RUNNER UP: The Croods
SHOULD WIN: The Croods
Blue Is The Warmest Color
The Great Beauty
The Hunt
The Past
The Wind Rises
Gee, any of these could win. Remember, the HFPA are all about popularity, not what the Academy likes
WILL WIN: Blue Is The Warmest Color
RUNNER UP: The Wind Rises
SHOULD WIN: I haven’t seen any of these.
So those are my Globe predictions. Can’t wait to see Tina and Amy
