So, the shortlist is out and, while it’s not the catastrophe it was last year, there are still a few surprises. No Hobbit. But more importantly, no Into The Woods. At this point, the film’s Oscar chances are dwindling by the day. It’ll pick up Streep and a few techs, but certainly not Picture.
With that said, here are the seven shortlisted films.
“The Amazing Spider-Man 2″
The only one I haven’t seen. And, luckily, the one I think is least likely to be nominated.
The only lock. The work on Carell is truly admirable.
“The Grand Budapest Hotel”
Considering the movie’s love at the Critics Choice awards, I’d say it has a VERY good chance of being nominated here.
“Guardians of the Galaxy”
Another probable nominee. Maybe even a winner?
Sure, they transformed Jolie, but they didn’t do much else. It wouldn’t be a total shock, though.
This would fit more into the ‘hairstyling’ section. However, considering that the film wasn’t mentioned in the Visual Effects shortlist, I’d say Academy Members didn’t really like this movie.
“The Theory of Everything”
Very possible. Strong work done, but it’s the most subtle of all the shortlisted films.
Right now, I’m looking at four movies vouching for three slots. I think the nominees should look something like this;
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Guardians Of The Galaxy
(alt: The Theory Of Everything)
And by the way, how much longer before this category gets expanded to five?
