2015 March Oscar Predictions (Or ‘Watch me gush over a movie that nobody else has on their radar.)

room1

Here we are. These are my predictions for March. I put a lot of thought into these, but the thing to consider is, there is no right or wrong answer here. Because nobody has seen the films yet, there’s no word on how good these films truly are.

Basically, I can predict whatever I want!

So, why not predict that my most anticipated film of the year, Room, will win Best Picture?

(update – St. James Place has changed its name to Bridge Of Spies)

PICTURE

Bridge Of Spies
Joy
The Revenant
Room
Steve Jobs

Man, it was so much easier when there were more nominees. There’s a pretty big margin of error here. Aside from Room, which many people don’t even have on their radar, I think the other nominees are understandable. I probably won’t be right, but my wishful thinking might help Room‘s chances.

DIRECTOR

Lenny Abrahmson, Room
Danny Boyle, Steve Jobs
Alejandro G. Inarritu, The Revenant
David O. Russell, Joy
Steven Speilberg, Bridge Of Spies

I’m having the five nominees for Picture be the same as Director. Maybe i’m lazy, but we’re not sure how this is all gonna come together.

ACTOR

Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant
Michael Fassbender, Steve Jobs
Ben Foster, Icon
Jake Gyllenhaal, Demolition
Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl

I’m not gonna jinx it by predicting that this is gonna be DiCaprio’s year. Instead, i’ll make it Gyllenhaal’s year. He’s owed an Oscar, and teaming up with Jean Marc Vallee might be just what he needs

ACTRESS

Cate Blanchett, Carol
Brie Larson, Room
Jennifer Lawrence, Joy
Julianne Moore, Freeheld
Meryl Streep, Ricki & The Flash

Larson holds the distinction of being the only non-winner in this category. With that said, I recently skimmed over Room for a few key scenes and I think Larson is in a very, very good position to win an Oscar. I’m more sure about this win than I am about any other win.

SUP. ACTOR

Alan Alda, Bridge Of Spies
Bradley Cooper, Joy
Benedict Cumberbatch, Black Mass
Tom Hardy, The Revenant
Jacob Tremblay, Room

My thinking is that they’re gonna push Jacob Tremblay supporting. It’s category fraud, but it’s the same tactic that made Tatum O’Neil and Timothy Hutton into Oscar Winners. Could Tremblay become the youngest Oscar winner in history? I don’t know, but if there’s ever a role for such a young actor to win an Oscar for, this is it.

SUP. ACTRESS

Marion Cotillard, Macbeth
Rooney Mara, Trash
Kristen Stewart, Clouds Of Sils Mara
Meryl Streep, Suffragette
Naomi Watts, Demolition

Stewart’s performance won the Cesar award, making her the only american actress to win a Cesar award. You know who the only American ACTOR to win a Cesar is? Adrien Brody for The Pianist. This is seriously good news for Stewart.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

Bridge Of Spies
Demolition
The Hateful Eight
Irrational Man
Joy

Finally an award for O’Russell, who’s been looking for one for a while now.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Black Mass
The Revenant
Room
Trash
The Walk

I’m really hoping Donoghue knows how to adapt her book right.

FILM EDITING

Bridge Of Spies
The Hateful Eight
The Revenant
Room
Steve Jobs

If I’m predicting it to win Picture, this might be a good award for it to pick up on the side.

CINEMATOGRAPHY

Bridge Of Spies
Hardcore
The Revenant
Room
Sicario

No word yet on who the DP on Room is. It better be someone amazing. Almost went with Sicario because of Roger Deakins, but NO! I do NOT want to jinx it. Also, if you haven’t heard of Hardcore, it’s an action movie that is filmed entirely as a P.O.V. shot. Ever wanted to feel like you’re in the middle of an action movie? Now you can!

PRODUCTION DESIGN

Bridge Of Spies
The Hateful Eight
Macbeth
The Revenant
Star Wars: The Force Awakens

This seems like a good way to reward St. James Place.

COSTUME DESIGN

Bridge Of Spies
Cinderella
Macbeth
The Revenant
Suite Francaise

Shakespeare tends to get noticed here.

BEST MAKEUP & HAIRSTYLING

The Danish Girl
The Revenant
Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Not sure how this one is gonna go down.

VISUAL EFFECTS

Avengers: Age Of Ultron
Jurassic World
Spectre
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Terminator: Genisys

These are all franchise films. Usually they go with something original in this category.

ORIGINAL SCORE

Bridge Of Spies
Everest
Macbeth
The Revenant
Room

Since nobody’s heard a note of music yet, so it’s tough to judge this.

ORIGINAL SONG

“???” from Inside Out
“???” from Pitch Perfect 2
“???” from Ricki & The Flash
“???” from Spectre
“???” from Trash

Who knows which films will even have songs?

SOUND EDITING

The Hateful Eight
The Revenant
Slow West
Spectre
Star Wars: The Force Awakens

I’m really not sure about this one.

SOUND MIXING

The Hateful Eight
The Revenant
Room
Spectre
Trash

I’m guessing that both Sound categories are gonna go to the same film this year.

ANIMATED FEATURE

The Good Dinosaur
Home
Inside Out
The Little Prince
Minions

Man, TWO Pixar films to vote for! Also, pretty sure that a foreign film or two is gonna sneak into this category, since this doesn’t look like a terribly great year for animation.
