Well, I’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is that I finally brought the grand total of movies seen in 2015 to… 2. Hey, better later than never.
The bad news is that this isn’t a good movie.
Now I did see the first Pitch Perfect not too long ago. Its no masterpiece or anything, but it’s an enjoyable enough movie and it’s the reason for my sudden crush on Anna Kendrick. However, what we have here is a prime example of a sequel that’s not quite as good as the original.
The film recycles a lot of elements from the first film that worked somewhat and oversell it. In many respects it’s the same movie all over again, The plot couldn’t be more basic and as a result, is extremely predictable. While the movie is harmless for the most part, it can also be very insensitive.
There was one foreign character who did nothing but make jokes about how awful the third world country they came from was, and another character did nothing but make jokes about being homosexual. These characters feel less like people and more like stereotypes that have no humanity except one characteristic.
I will admit, the film has a handful of funny jokes and good singing. And don’t get me wrong, I think it’s great that females are becoming more prominent in cinema, both on and behind the camera, but there’s nothing in this particular film that makes it stand out. So, if you’re really into the singing I would suggest you buy the soundtrack instead, because I don’t think this movie is worth seeing, at least not in the cinema.

P.S. Anna Kendrick, if you’re reading this, my dislike of the movie did not stop me from liking you in it, and also are you busy on Friday night?
