2015 Oscar Predictions: August Update

Not a whole lot has changed except we got more info on Room. It has the release date, the trailer, the poster, and the news that Brie Larson was going all ‘method’. All that we need now is the reviews. Once critics start going nuts over the film, then we’re set. I don’t see how the movie could possibly be bad, seeing how Emma Donoghue is adapting her own book and all indication seems to be that the film stays true to the book in every sense.

PICTURE

Bridge Of Spies
Carol
The Danish Girl
The Hateful Eight
Inside Out
Joy
The Revenant
Room
Steve Jobs

No change.

DIRECTOR

Lenny Abrahmson, Room
Danny Boyle, Steve Jobs
Alejandro G. Inarritu, The Revenant
David O. Russell, Joy
Steven Speilberg, Bridge Of Spies

Replaced Haynes with Boyle.

ACTOR

Johnny Depp, Black Mass
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant
Michael Fassbender, Steve Jobs
Tom Hanks, Bridge Of Spies
Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl

I removed Jake Gyllenhaal because Demolition got pushed back to next year. But that left me with a problem. I couldn’t decide who to fill that 5th slot and in the end I decided to go with Johnny Depp. By the way, is it just me, or does this year have more female-oriented films than male-oriented films? I’m all for gender equality, but it looks like Best Actor might actually become a weaker race than Best Actress for the first time ever.

ACTRESS

Cate Blanchett, Carol
Brie Larson, Room
Jennifer Lawrence, Joy
Carey Mulligan, Suffragette
Meryl Streep, Ricki & The Flash

Here’s a joke for awards show hosts to use. “In Room, Brie Larson plays a woman who has become desperate and is clinging to the hope that she may one day be free. Just like anyone who’s ever been stuck with a small child in one place for a very long time.”

SUP. ACTOR

Bradley Cooper, Joy
Robert DeNiro, Joy
Tom Hardy, The Revenant
Kurt Russel, The Hateful Eight
Jacob Tremblay, Room

Replaced Alan Alda with Robert DeNiro.

SUP. ACTRESS

Marion Cotillard, Macbeth
Jennifer Jason Lee, The Hateful Eight
Rooney Mara, Carol
Ellen Page, Freeheld
Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs

Replaced Streep and Watts with Page and Winslet.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Replaced Southpaw with The Mad Max.

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

Jurassic World
Mad Max: Fury Road

The Martian
Spectre
Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Replaced Terminator Genisys with Jurassic World. I decided to make Mad Max the winner because everybody’s praising it so much and I should probably see it.

ORIGINAL SCORE

Bridge Of Spies
Inside Out
Room
Suffragette
The Walk

Replaced Southpaw with Suffragette

ORIGINAL SONG

“Cold One” from Ricki & The Flash
“Equation” from The Little Prince
“Love Me Like You Do” from 50 Shades Of Grey
“See You Again” from Furious 7
“???” from Spectre

I have no idea. I replaced The Hateful Eight and The Good Dinosaur with Furious 7 and The Little Prince. Also, I was a little uncertain about ‘Cold One’, but then I realized that they’re not gonna pass up the opportunity to have Meryl Streep perform at the Oscars. I don’t really think it’s gonna win, but I can’t think of what alternative to choose.

SOUND EDITING

The Hateful Eight
Inside Out
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Revenant
Star Wars: The Force Awakens

No change.

No change.

  1. What’s with Room and you? It probably is a great film, I like the premise and I will watch those videos you linked but still? I hope there are more indie films in screenplays. And really, Ricki and the Flash? Can’t she go to supporting with Suffragette?

    • I read the book and was completely mesmerized by it – it might be one of my favorite books. As for Ricki & The Flash, i saw the film (review coming soon) and thought Meryl was amazing – and that’s usually enough to make the Academy bite. But i’m not sure – I might be removing her from my predictions soon.

      • She usually gets at least a nom in some category, so not a bad prediction. I have to see the film then. And read Room apparently. 🙂
