So, I looked at my calendar and it turns out I started my Let’sPredict articles a day early. So, I was able to take yesterday off. All right, back on schedule.
As of right now, this is one of the few categories where I’ve seen all of the nominated films. (Review of Straight Outta Compton coming soon.) So I have a little more leverage on this category. But not by much.
5th Most Likely To Win: Bridge Of Spies
ABEL: Would it help?
Maybe I’m underestimating this film, as it is one of two Best Picture nominees in the category. But this movie just has the feel of a Best Picture nominee that walks away with nothing. I mean, how many people really love the screenplay?
4th Most Likely To Win: Ex Machina
AVA: Is it strange, to have made something that hates you?
Now this screenplay is a little more respected. However, it’s from a science fiction movie. How often does a sci-fi film win screenplay? I think the movie would need a Best Picture nomination to have a serious chance.
3rd Most Likely To Win: Straight Outta Compton
CUBE: How you figure we in a gang? ‘Cause we black?
I really didn’t like Straight Outta Compton. If you’re upset already, I bet you can hardly wait for my review. Anyway, a lot of people really seem to like this movie, and I won’t hold that against you, but… do you really think this is something the Academy will reward? That quote above, I had to look for a quote with no swears in it. Plus, it’s the film’s only nomination.
2nd Most Likely To Win: Inside Out
JOY: I just wanted Riley to be happy…
If there’s one wish I have for this year’s Oscars, it would be Inside Out winning Best Original Screenplay. The film missed out on a Best Picture nomination (for reasons that will forever remain a mystery to me.) A lot of people, including myself, maintain that this film’s screenplay deserves to be recognized. It would be so cool if we could get an animated film to win in Screenplay. But…
MY PREDICTED WINNER: Spotlight
ROBBY: Which story do you want us to write? ‘Cause we’re writing one of them.
Most of the time, a Best Picture winner will win Best Screenplay. Right now, the Best Picture race is between Spotlight & The Big Short, and even if Spotlight doesn’t win Picture, this seems like an easy award to pick up. The screenplay has won most of the critics awards, and is the kind of writing that tends to win here. While I’d love for an upset to happen, this category seems to be an easy win for Spotlight.
My personal ranking of the nominees;
1.) Inside Out
2.) Ex Machina
3.) Spotlight
4.) Bridge Of Spies
5.) Straight Outta Compton
Ex Machina or Inside Out for the win. C’mon Academy, take a chance!
yea, Spotlight is amazing, but I agree that IO needs to win this one 🙂
