Independent Spirit Award Nominations

Here we go. Let the games begin.

BEST FEATURE

American Honey
Chronic
Jackie
Manchester By The Sea
Moonlight

I’ve only seen one of these. Four of these make sense, but what the heck is Chronic?

BEST DIRECTOR

Andrea Arnold – American Honey
Barry Jenkins – Moonlight
Pablo Larrain – Jackie
Jeff Nichols – Loving
Kelly Reichardt – Certain Women

I’ve seen two of these. Good on them for nominating two female directors, but I’m kinda shocked there’s no Kenneth Lonergan.

BEST ACTOR

Casey Affleck – Manchester By The Sea
David Harewood – Free In Deed
Viggo Mortensen – Captan Fantastic
Jesse Plemons – Other People
Tim Roth – Chronic

I haven’t seen any of these. I’m surprised that there’s no Joel Edgerton.

BEST ACTRESS

Annette Bening – 20th Century Women
Isabelle Huppert – Elle
Sasha Lane – American Honey
Ruth Negga – Loving
Natalie Portman – Jackie

I’ve only seen Loving. You ladies enjoy yourself until later awards shows when Emma Stone shows up.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Ralph Fiennes – A Bigger Splash
Ben Foster – Hell Or High Water
Lucas Hedges – Manchester By The Sea
Shia LeBeouf – American Honey
Craig Robinson – Morris From America

I’ve only seen Morris From America. I’m shocked that Mahershala Ali and Peter Sarsgaard missed, and I’m confused as to how Ben Foster got on over Jeff Bridges. But I am excited that Craig Robinson got on.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Edwina Findley – Free in Deed
Paulina Garcia – Little Men
Lily Gladstone – Certain Women
Riley Keough – American Honey
Molly Shannon – Other People

I don’t know what to make of this lineup. No mention of Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris, or even Greta Gerwig. I haven’t seen any of these films.

BEST SCREENPLAY

20th Century Women
Hell Or High Water
Little Men
Manchester By The Sea
Moonlight

I’ve seen one of these. This category looks fine enough, though I’m surprised Jackie isn’t present.

BEST FILM EDITING

Hell Or High Water
Jackie
Manchester By The Sea
Moonlight
Swiss Army Man

I’ve seen two of these. So happy about Swiss Army Man getting in.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

American Honey
The Childhood Of A Leader
The Eyes Of My Mother
Free In Deed
Moonlight

Again, Moonlight is the only one I’ve seen, as well as the only one with any real shot at an Oscar nod.

BEST FIRST FEATURE

The Childhood Of A Leader
The Fits
Other People
Swiss Army Man
The Witch

I’ve seen three of these. So pumped about Swiss Army Man.

BEST FIRST SCREENPLAY

Barry
Christine
Jean Of The Joneses
Other People
The Witch

I’ve only seen one. I don’t really know what to say about this category.

BEST DOCUMENTARY

13th
Cameraperson
I Am Not Your Negro
O. J. Made In America
Sonita
Under The Sun

Any award that 13th wins is totally fine by me.

BEST INTERNATIONAL FEATURE

Aquarius
Chevalier
My Golden Days
Toni Erdmann
Under The Shadow

I had to double check that Under The Sun and Under The Shadow were not the same movie. Just file them next to Under The Same Moon and Undertale.

JOHN CASSAVETTES AWARD

Free In Deed
Hunter Gatherer
Lovesong
Nakom
Spa Night

This is the award given for best film made under $500,000. I’ve never heard of any of these films, and I’m probably not gonna watch them.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got movies to watch and charts to update!
