Critics Choice Nominations

Okay, so I released my predictions for these awards several days ago. It’s time to see how I did.

BEST PICTURE

The Big Sick
Call Me By Your Name
Darkest Hour
Dunkirk
The Florida Project
Get Out
Lady Bird
The Post
The Shape Of Water
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

8/10. I had The Disaster Artist and Mudbound over The Big Sick and The Florida Project. So, I’ve seen half of these movies, and this seems like a pretty solid lineup. At this point, I’ve pretty much given up all hope for Downsizing and The Greatest Showman being Best Picture nominees. However, if there’s any justice in the world, Coco might still have a tiny, tiny chance to earn that nomination. Or at least, that’s what I’m telling myself to keep myself sane.

BEST DIRECTOR

Guillermo Del Toro, The Shape Of Water
Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird
Luca Guadagnino, Call Me By Your Name
Martin McDonagh, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk
Jordan Peele, Get Out
Steven Spielberg, The Post

6/7. The main reason that the Critics Choice awards are so hard to predict is that they keep changing the number of nominees they allow. I don’t know how many other directors outside of these seven are in serious contention. Also, if for some reason you still aren’t predicting Get Out to be a Best Picture contender, you need to change that.

BEST ACTOR

Timothée Chalamet, Call Me By Your Name
Daniel Day-Lewis, Phantom Thread
James Franco, The Disaster Artist
Jake Gyllenhaal, Stronger
Tom Hanks, The Post
Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out
Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour

6/7. It seems like they’re just nominating all the actors in contention.

BEST ACTRESS

Jessica Chastain, Molly’s Game
Sally Hawkins, The Shape Of Water
Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Margot Robbie, I, Tonya
Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird
Meryl Streep, The Post

5/6. I predicted Stone instead of Chastain. Either way, I think the other five actresses are our main Oscar contenders.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Willem Dafoe, The Florida Project
Armie Hammer, Call Me By Your Name
Richard Jenkins, The Shape Of Water
Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Patrick Stewart, Logan
Michael Stuhlbarg, Call Me By Your Name

4/6. I had Harrelson and Rylance over Stewart and Stuhlbarg. It’s exciting to see Stewart gather attention for his role. Are we underestimating him for an Oscar nomination?

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Mary J. Blige, Mudbound
Hong Chau, Downsizing
Tiffany Haddish, Girls Trip
Holly Hunter, The Big Sick
Allison Janney, I, Tonya
Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird
Octavia Spencer, The Shape Of Water

5/7. I’m stoked to see Hong Chau getting some recognition even though I have yet to see her performance.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

The Big Sick
Get Out
Lady Bird
The Post
The Shape Of Water
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

4/6. I had Darkest Hour and Downsizing instead of The Big Sick and The Shape Of Water

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Call Me By Your Name
The Disaster Artist
Molly’s Game
Mudbound
Wonder

5/5. Wow, I’m super proud of myself for predicting Wonder.

BEST YOUNG ACTOR / ACTRESS

McKenna Grace, Gifted
Dafne Keen, Logan
Brooklyn Prince, The Florida Project
Millicent Simmonds, Wonderstruck
Jacob Tremblay, Wonder

4/5. I guess I shouldn’t be shocked that McKenna Grace made it on. I just wish Will Tilston got some recognition. Actually, Ahn-Seo Hyun from Okja would have also been a worthy nominee.

BEST ACTING ENSEMBLE

Dunkirk
Lady Bird
Mudbound
The Post
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

4/5. Man, this year is tough for ensembles. I find it interesting that The Shape Of Water didn’t show up here, even though it got nominated for everything else. If the film fails to get an Ensemble nomination at SAG, it loses all hope of becoming a Best Picture Winner.

BEST FILM EDITING

Baby Driver
Blade Runner 2049
Dunkirk
The Post
The Shape Of Water

3/5. I’m surprised that Get Out missed the lineup.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

Blade Runner 2049
Call Me By Your Name
Dunkirk
Mudbound
The Shape Of Water

4/5. I really wish they could have more of a standard for how many nominees they allow per category.

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN

Beauty And The Beast
Blade Runner 2049
Dunkirk
Murder On The Orient Express
Phantom Thread
The Shape Of Water

5/6. I hate to keep bringing this up, but Coco deserves to be here.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN

Beauty And The Beast
Blade Runner 2049
Phantom Thread
The Shape Of Water
Wonder Woman

3/5. I’m not entirely sure what wins in this category.

BEST MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING

Beauty And The Beast
Darkest Hour
I, Tonya
The Shape Of Water
Wonder

4/5. In hindsight, I should have predicted Wonder to be nominated.

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

Blade Runner 2049
Dunkirk
The Shape Of Water
Thor: Ragnarok
War For The Planet Of The Apes
Wonder Woman

4/6. I’m honestly shocked that I didn’t include Dunkirk in my initial predictions.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

The Breadwinner
Coco
Despicable Me 3
The Lego Batman Movie
Loving Vincent

4/5. I honestly feel a little bad for GKids. If Coco hadn’t been so good, maybe GKids could have finally won an Oscar this year, seeing how there’s no other real competition.

BEST ACTION MOVIE

Baby Driver
Logan
Thor: Ragnarok
War For The Planet Of The Apes
Wonder Woman

3/5. I’m a little disappointed that they took out the awards for Best Actor and Best Actress in an Action Movie. Maybe we could have seen Hugh Jackman and Gal Gadot win something.

BEST COMEDY

The Big Sick
The Disaster Artist
Girls Trip
I, Tonya
Lady Bird

2/5. Yeah, I really don’t know what I was thinking with these predictions. Also, here’s one more category where Coco could have been nominated.

BEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY

Steve Carell, Battle Of The Sexes
James Franco, The Disaster Artist
Chris Hemsworth, Thor: Ragnarok
Kumail Nanjiami, The Big Sick
Adam Sandler, The Meyerowitz Stories

3/5. I’m surprised I didn’t predict Carell and Stone. I guess I just forgot that Battle Of The Sexes is considered a comedy.

BEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY

Tiffany Haddish, Girls Trip
Zoe Kazan, The Big Sick
Margot Robbie, I, Tonya
Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird
Emma Stone, Battle Of The Sexes

4/5. I’m a bit confused as to whether or not Haddish is considered Lead. Obviously, her main campaign is in Supporting, but she might try for a Globe nomination in Lead.

BEST SCI-FI / HORROR MOVIE

Blade Runner 2049
Get Out
It
The Shape Of Water

3/4. I thought The Shape Of Water was fantasy.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

BPM (Beats Per Minute)
A Fantastic Woman
First They Killed My Father
In The Fade
The Square
Thelma

5/6. We’ll see what happens with Oscar.

BEST SONG

“Evermore” – Beauty And The Beast
“The Mystery Of Love” – Call Me By Your Name
“Remember Me” – Coco
“Stand Up For Something” – Marshall
“This Is Me” – The Greatest Showman

5/5. “Remember Me” seems like the most likely winner, although I worry that the song doesn’t feel substantial enough outside of the context of the film.

BEST SCORE

Blade Runner 2049
Darkest Hour
Dunkirk
Phantom Thread
The Post
The Shape Of Water

4/6. The one category where I was actually predicting that Coco would surprise…

Well, that’s a lot to take in. Now, if you don’t mind, I have a lot of movies to watch.
