The Jungle Book making a strong showing is my one big ‘out-there’ prediction. In less than two months, we’ll know if the movie is gonna be a big deal or not. A lot of people think that Silence is winning, but when has a movie been the obvious choice in March, and then went on to win Best Picture? Probably Return Of The King.

I’m going out on a bit of a limb by predicting The Disaster Artist. The film is the true story of Tommy Wiseau, the writer/director/star behind the ‘worst movie ever made’, The Room. It’s a comedy, granted. But it is about filmmaking, and the Academy does have a soft spot for movies about filmmaking. Who knows?

BEST DIRECTOR

Niki Caro – The Zookeeper’s Wife
James Franco – The Disaster Artist
Ang Lee – Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
Nate Parker – The Birth Of A Nation
Martin Scorsese – Silence

Even if The Disaster Artist wins Picture, it doesn’t seem like the kind of film that wins Director. Is there a split written in the stars? Could we be looking at Scorsese’s 2nd Oscar?

Tom Hanks – Sully
Michael Keaton – The Founder
Liam Neeson – Silence
Nate Parker – The Birth Of A Nation

These five seem pretty solid. I think it’s actually pretty likely that Keaton wins this, since everybody knows he’s overdue an Oscar by now.

Amy Adams – Nocturnal Animals
Emily Blunt – The Girl On The Train
Jessica Chastain – The Zookeeper’s Wife
Lupita N’yongo – The Queen Of Katwe
Meryl Streep – Florence Foster Jenkins

All five of these women seem like sure bets. It’s looking like this will finally be Adams year, but I’m happy if Chastain wins, too.

I’ll admit that Hail, Caesar seems kind of unlikely, but I’m really not sure where to go in this category? Also, I’m not bold enough to predict it yet, but if Zootopia keeps getting widespread support, we just might get our first ever animated movie to be nominated in this category.
