Oh man. Fresh new Oscar predictions.
These are gonna be so wrong, I just know it.
BEST PICTURE
Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
The Birth Of A Nation
The Disaster Artist
The Founder
Nocturnal Animals
The Jungle Book
La La Land
Silence
Sully
The Zookeeper’s Wife
The Jungle Book making a strong showing is my one big ‘out-there’ prediction. In less than two months, we’ll know if the movie is gonna be a big deal or not. A lot of people think that Silence is winning, but when has a movie been the obvious choice in March, and then went on to win Best Picture? Probably Return Of The King.
I’m going out on a bit of a limb by predicting The Disaster Artist. The film is the true story of Tommy Wiseau, the writer/director/star behind the ‘worst movie ever made’, The Room. It’s a comedy, granted. But it is about filmmaking, and the Academy does have a soft spot for movies about filmmaking. Who knows?
BEST DIRECTOR
Niki Caro – The Zookeeper’s Wife
James Franco – The Disaster Artist
Ang Lee – Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
Nate Parker – The Birth Of A Nation
Martin Scorsese – Silence
Even if The Disaster Artist wins Picture, it doesn’t seem like the kind of film that wins Director. Is there a split written in the stars? Could we be looking at Scorsese’s 2nd Oscar?
BEST ACTOR
James Franco – The Disaster Artist
Tom Hanks – Sully
Michael Keaton – The Founder
Liam Neeson – Silence
Nate Parker – The Birth Of A Nation
These five seem pretty solid. I think it’s actually pretty likely that Keaton wins this, since everybody knows he’s overdue an Oscar by now.
BEST ACTRESS
Amy Adams – Nocturnal Animals
Emily Blunt – The Girl On The Train
Jessica Chastain – The Zookeeper’s Wife
Lupita N’yongo – The Queen Of Katwe
Meryl Streep – Florence Foster Jenkins
All five of these women seem like sure bets. It’s looking like this will finally be Adams year, but I’m happy if Chastain wins, too.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Daniel Bruhl – The Zookeeper’s Wife
Dave Franco – The Disaster Artist
Andrew Garfield – Silence
Jake Gyllenhaal – Nocturnal Animals
Nick Offerman – The Founder
I have absolutely no idea whatsoever. It is extremely likely that none of these people make it. I just have no idea who else to nominate.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Jennifer Anniston – The Yellow Birds
Laura Dern – The Founder
Jennifer Jason Leigh – LBJ
Laura Linney – Sully
Kristen Stewart – Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
Oh, man. None of these sound like winners.
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
The Birth Of A Nation
The Founder
La La Land
LBJ
Story Of Your Life
Michael Keaton’s last two films won this category.
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Billy Lynn’s Halftime Walk
The Disaster Artist
Nocturnal Animals
Silence
The Zookeeper’s Wife
If I’m predicting it to win Picture, I think it’s pretty likely that it’ll win this, too.
BEST FILM EDITING
Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
The Disaster Artist
The Founder
Silence
Sully
Did you know that the Best Picture winner has only won Best Editing once in the last six years?
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
Birth Of A Nation
Hail, Caesar!
The Jungle Book
Silence
You know what, screw it. I’m starting this right now: #GetDeakinsAnOscar. He might not deserve it for this particular film, but if we don’t start campaigning like crazy, this might never happen. Give this man an effing Oscar already!
BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN
Birth Of A Nation
Hail, Caesar!
The Jungle Book
Silence
Story Of Your Life
I’ll admit that Hail, Caesar seems kind of unlikely, but I’m really not sure where to go in this category? Also, I’m not bold enough to predict it yet, but if Zootopia keeps getting widespread support, we just might get our first ever animated movie to be nominated in this category.
BEST COSTUME DESIGN
Alice Through The Looking Glass
Birth Of A Nation
Hail, Caesar!
Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiars
Silence
Ditto what I said above. (About Hail, Caesar!)
BEST MAKEUP & HAIRSTYLING
Birth Of A Nation
Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them
Silence
No idea where to go here.
BEST VISUAL EFFECTS
The BFG
Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them
The Jungle Book
Star Wars: Rogue One
Story Of Your Life
I’m actually pretty confident here. The effects I’ve seen in the trailer look really, really good. Especially how very little is actually live-action. And if the film gets a very warm reception, I can totally see this win happening.
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
The BFG
Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
The Jungle Book
Story Of Your Life
The Zookeeper’s Wife
I’m 99% positive that John Williams will get his fifty-first Oscar nomination for The BFG. But I have no idea who’s the frontrunner to win.
BEST ORIGINAL SONG
The BFG
The Jungle Book
Moana
Sing Street
“Try Everything” – Zootopia
Not sure about this category.
BEST SOUND EDITING
Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
The Jungle Book
Passengers
Star Wars: Rogue One
Sully
If it’s gonna be a BP nominee and win Visual Effects, it probably has a strong chance here, too.
BEST SOUND MIXING
Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
The Jungle Book
La La Land
Silence
Sully
Ditto what it says above.
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
Finding Dory
Kubo & The Two Strings
Loving Vincent
Moana
Zootopia
The reviews for Zootopia are through the roof! I’ll be seeing it as soon as I can, but I think we may have our winner right off the bat!
I’m gonna leave you on this note: I know my predictions are wrong. That’s part of the fun.
how off were ur nom predictions last year at this point?
I’m planning on doing a post soon where I talk about all my Early Predictions. But regarding last year’s predictions, I think it’s worth noting that I was the first person to predict Brie Larson winning 😉
Great job connor!
