2016 Oscar Predictions: May Update

Well, not much has changed this month. And I’m not sure how much is gonna change next month. But that’s the thing about the Oscars… it takes a while before you get into the thick of it.

BEST PICTURE

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
The Birth Of A Nation
The Founder
La La Land
The Masterpiece
Silence
Sully
The Zookeeper’s Wife
Zootopia

I got rid of Nocturnal Animals so now there’s nine nominees. The Disaster Artist changes its name to The Masterpiece. And I don’t really think it’s gonna win Best Picture, but I’m not really sure which of these films have a serious chance at winning.

BEST DIRECTOR

Niki Caro – The Zookeeper’s Wife
James Franco – The Masterpiece
Ang Lee – Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
Nate Parker – The Birth Of A Nation
Martin Scorsese – Silence

No change. I really don’t have a clue in this category.

BEST ACTOR

James Franco – The Disaster Artist
Tom Hanks – Sully
Michael Keaton The Founder
Andrew Garfield – Silence
Nate Parker – The Birth Of A Nation

So, I decided to switch around Garfield and Neeson, putting the former in lead and the latter in supporting.

BEST ACTRESS

Amy Adams – Nocturnal Animals
Emily Blunt – The Girl On The Train
Jessica Chastain – The Zookeeper’s Wife
Viola Davis – Fences
Meryl Streep – Florence Foster Jenkins

While the race is looking pretty crowded, these five still look like pretty solid bets to me.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Daniel Bruhl – The Zookeeper’s Wife
Dave Franco – The Masterpiece
Liam Neeson – Silence
Nick Offerman – The Founder
Michael Shannon – Loving

Made Neeson my winner. Also replaced Gyllenhaal with Shannon.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Haley Bennett – The Girl On The Train
Laura Linney – Sully
Lupita Nyong’o – Queen Of Katwe
Kristen Stewart – Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
Rachel Weisz – The Light Between Oceans

Replaced Aniston, Ellis and Leigh with Bennett, Nyong’o and Weisz. Really curious to see how this category plays out. Also, a few online bloggers have mentioned Margot Robbie in Suicide Squad. I don’t think she’ll be Oscar-nominated, but I won’t be surprised if she gets a Globe nod.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

The Birth Of A Nation
The Founder
La La Land
Loving
Zootopia

I replaced LBJ with Loving.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Billy Lynn’s Halftime Walk
Fences
The Masterpiece
Silence
The Zookeeper’s Wife

Replaced with Nocturnal Animals with Fences. Watch out for Finding Dory if that performs well.

BEST FILM EDITING

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
The Masterpiece
Silence
Sully
The Zookeeper’s Wife

Replaced The Founder with The Zookeeper’s Wife.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk

The Jungle Book
Silence
Story Of Your Life

Replaced Hail Caeser with Story Of Your Life.

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN

Birth Of A Nation
Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them
Hail Caeser
Silence
The Zookeeper’s Wife

Replaced Story Of Your Life with Fantastic Beasts. No idea about the winner.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN

Alice Through The Looking Glass
Birth Of A Nation
Hail Caesar
How To Talk To Girls At Parties
The Zookeeper’s Wife

Replaced Miss Peregrine with How to Talk To Girls At Parties. Because apparently Sandy Powell is attached to the latter. I also replaced Silence with The Zookeeper’s Wife and made that my winner.

BEST MAKEUP & HAIRSTYLING

Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them
Silence
Suicide Squad

Replaced Birth Of A Nation with Suicide Squad.

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

The BFG
Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them
The Jungle Book
Star Wars: Rogue One
Story Of Your Life

No change… but watch out for Passengers or Suicide Squad.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE

The BFG
Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
The Jungle Book
Story Of Your Life
The Zookeeper’s Wife

No change here.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG

“???” – The BFG
“???” – La La Land
“???” – Moana
“???” – Sing Street
“Try Everything” – Zootopia

Replaced The Jungle Book with La La Land.

BEST SOUND EDITING

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
The Jungle Book
Star Wars: Rogue One
Sully
Zootopia

No change. But Passengers and Suicide Squad both make a case to be nominate here.

BEST SOUND MIXING

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
The Jungle Book
La La Land
Silence
Sully

No change.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

April & The Extraordinary World
Finding Dory
Kubo & The Two Strings
Moana

Replaced Loving Vincent with April & The Extraordinary World.

Well, that’s May for you.
