Early 2017 Oscar Predictions

Let’s do this thing.

BEST PICTURE

Darkest Hour
Downsizing
Dunkirk
The Greatest Showman
The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Mortara
Mother!
Molly’s Game
Mudbound

Victoria And Abdul
Wonderstruck

I went back and forth on this, but I;m rooting for Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk to be the big movie of the year.

BEST DIRECTOR

Michael Gracey – The Greatest Showman
Christopher Nolan – Dunkirk
Dee Rees – Mudbound
Aaron Sorkin – Molly’s Game
Joe Wright – Darkest Hour

It’s time for Nolan to finally get that Oscar. Also, I’m rooting for Dee Rees to become the first woman of color nominated for Best Director.

BEST ACTOR

Chadwick Boseman – Marshall
Matt Damon – Downsizing
Benedict Cumberbatch – The Current War
Hugh Jackman – The Greatest Showman
Gary Oldman – Darkest Hour

Any of these could potentially win, but I feel especially confident about Jackman.

BEST ACTRESS

Jessica Chastain – Molly’s Game
Judi Dench – Victoria And Abdul
Brie Larson – The Glass Castle
Jennifer Lawrence – Mother!
Kate Winslet – The Mountain Between Us

I’m really hoping that this is Chastain’s year.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Zac Efron – The Greatest Showman
Idris Elba – Molly’s Game
Tom Hardy – Dunkirk
John Hurt – Darkest Hour
Mark Rylance – The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara

Not really sure about this category.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Michelle Williams – The Greatest Showman
Michelle Pfieffer – Mother!
Kristin Wiig – Downsizing
Julianne Moore – Wonderstruck
Kristen Scott Thomas – Darkest Hour

Two Michelles and Two Kristens. Oh my.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

Darkest Hour
Downsizing
Dunkirk
The Greatest Showman
Mother!

I honestly don’t know which one of these has the best shot at winning. I do know that they all seem likely to be nominated.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Montoya
Molly’s Game
Mudbound
Victoria And Abdul
Wonderstruck

Aaron Sorkin always contends.

BEST FILM EDITING

Dunkirk
The Greatest Showman
Molly’s Game
Mudbound
Wonderstruck

I think Dunkirk could potentially sweep the tech awards.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

Blade Runner 2049
Dunkirk
The Greatest Showman
The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Montoya
Wonderstruck

I would love if this could be Roger Deakins’ year. But I’m not bold enough to predict it.

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN

Beauty And The Beast
Darkest Hour
Dunkirk
The Greatest Showman
Wonderstruck

This category looks pretty strong to me.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN

Beauty And The Beast
Dunkirk
The Greatest Showman
Wonderstruck
The Zookeeper’s Wife

I’ve been confident about Beauty And The Beast winning the oscar ever since the first teaser.

BEST MAKEUP & HARSTYLING

Darkest Hour
Dunkirk
Logan

You can never really tell with this category.

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

Beauty And The Beast
Dunkirk
Downsizing
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
War For The Planet Of The Apes

This category is always the toughest to decide when you’re looking at it a year ahead.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE

Darkest Hour
Dunkirk
The Greatest Showman
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Wonderstruck

Let’s see if we can get Carter Burwell an Oscar.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG

“???” – Band Aid
“Evermore” – Beauty And The Beast
“???” – Coco
“???” – The Greatest Showman
“???” – Unicorn Store

Of course, this category is a complete toss-up.

BEST SOUND EDITING

Blade Runner 2049
Dunkirk
Kong: Skull Island
Logan
Star Wars: The Last Jedi

And the sound categories are basically guesswork.

BEST SOUND MIXING

Annihilation
Dunkirk
The Greatest Showman
Logan
Wonderstruck

But then again, this is all guesswork.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

The Breadwinner
Cars 3
Coco
Ferdinand
Loving Vincent

This year looks pretty barren for animated films, which kind of sucks.

  1. I’m keeping an eye on Battle of the Sexes. Fresh from Best Actress win (Emma Stone) + Best Actor nominee (Steve Carell) + directors of Best Picture nominee Little Miss Sunshine.

And I hope you’re right on Chastain. She’s been doing consistently great work since her breakout year in 2011. Surprised she didn’t catch much traction for last year’s Miss Sloane (she was fantastic in it).
